From the electrified city streets of Johannesburg to the vast and all-encompassing beauty of the bushveld, South Africa opened its arms wide and welcomed the world. Valerie Albarda was there among the revelers celebrating not only the historic sporting event but a special occasion of her own as well. Travel alongside Valerie as she spends nine days in Johannesburg soaking up the sights, sounds and smells of the city and outlying areas. Along the way she encounters a cast of vuvuzela-toting characters, experiences an emotional excursion to the Apartheid Museum, romps in the dirt with rare white lion cubs, allows her stomach to be her intrepid guide as she samples local fare and more.

Valerie Albarda, a freelance food writer, is the author of "An Affair to Remember: Bellissimo Italia," and is an avid traveler and lover of great cuisine. In her lifetime she has reveled in the joys of traipsing off to such far-flung places as Italy, The Seychelles, Germany, The Netherlands, Dubai, Cairo, Belgium, South Africa, various sunny locales in the Caribbean and points near and far across the United States. Valerie is married to a globetrotting Dutchman and is the mother to one four-legged child, Kenji, a blonde lab-mix. Valerie and her family reside in Stamford, CT, where, when she isn't devouring and writing about food, she is in constant planning mode for her next trip.
