At once delving into this question and offering a practical guide to subverting racial power relations and the politics of the 'gaze', Beyond the Feminine looks at the black and white female dichotomy. It examines how light skinned black and white women are privileged over dark skinned black women in music videos, advertising, and even in classic paintings. Focusing on race as implicit in constructions of gender, the works discussed deconstruct the links between race and gender to expose embedded power relations.

Ope Lori is a Lecturer at both Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, UK and Leeds College of Art, UK. She is also a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the TrAIN research centre at UAL. She has given seminars, talks and workshops nationally and internationally, being awarded in 2012 with a Visiting Scholar position at the Centre for African Studies and Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. She is also a practising artist and has shown nationally and internationally.
