Description

In the follow up to his popular figure drawing books, The Anatomy of Style and Figures from Life, comes Drawing from Photos, Patrick’s latest volume of step-by-step drawing techniques.

In this volume, Patrick explores the art of drawing from photos and the minefield of unseen problems such as distortion, tangents, and shallow depth. Each step-by-step includes a model posing to refer to as you draw along, recreating a virtual workshop from Patrick’s eye view as he shares his methods, insights and interpretations to produce drawings with style and confidence.

For sheer depth of writing and information, no artist, art lover, or student should be without his latest volume on their bookshelves.

About the Author

Patrick J. Jones is the author of several how-to art books, including Oil Painting Masterclass and The Anatomy of Style. He has recently released a collection of his work in hardback, The Sci-fi & Fantasy Art of Patrick J. Jones. Patrick has worked for most major SF & Fantasy publishers and film companies worldwide and teaches a masterclass in figure drawing in his adopted homeland, Brisbane, Australia.

Steve Huston was born and raised in Alaska, but he works and lives in Belgrade, Montana, USA. After graduating from Pasadena's Art Center College of Design he embarked on a career as an illustrator. His clients included Caesar's Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios. After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, he decided to teach and coach — first at his alma mater, and then at Disney, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, and several other studios.

Praise For…

‘The first time I saw “The Forbidden Kingdom”, a painting of Conan and a female figure by Patrick Jones, it stopped me cold. I was looking at a perfect combination of Frazetta, Vallejo and Buscema, painted in a uniquely classical style I had not often seen utilized in the genre. I instantly sought out more of his work and was continuously amazed by his impeccable technique and mastery of his medium. He’s an incredible artist who I believe will have a huge influence on the next generation of aspiring fantasy painters.’ Joe Jusko

‘Luscious color! That’s the first thing I think when I see one of Patrick’s paintings. Then my eyes roam around and see the silky skin of the characters, the intricate design work of their ornamentation...’ Julie Bell

‘Blazing with color and heroics, Patrick's paintings capture the best of what Science Fiction and Fantasy has to offer- deft draftsmanship, killer compositions and sensual atmospheres. It is a thrill to see what he will unveil next from the studio…’ Donato Giancola

'Patrick has a fire and a passion in his art that very few have. His understanding of anatomy, design, composition and lighting is excellent. His technique and style are brilliant. But mostly his art is magical...’ Greg Hildebrandt

‘I expect to be impressed by every piece that comes out of the hands of Patrick. His control of the paint and brushes is truly amazing. His technique is impeccable...’ Boris Vallejo

Patrick's work explodes with passion, light and shadow. His handling of oil paint is clearly his own, and each of his books have been an inspiration and great masterclass of time-honored traditional painting. His books are essentials in any creative person's library." Bob Eggleton

'The work of a driven man! Driven by an incredibly focused passion for those timeless elements…The physicality of heroic myth and unabashed eroticism. The clear and unapologetic love of technique - that hard coalface of our trade that serious artists have to fight so hard to master.’ Jim Burns
