Description

Antibiotic Terramycin (Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Ointment) is a brilliant yellow ointment that has significant antibacterial action. Its full name is Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Ointment. It is one of the broad-spectrum antibiotics that is the most adaptable and may be used to treat infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, spirochetes, rickettsiae, and some of the bigger viruses.
Antibiotics developed from Bacillus polymyxa include polymyxin B sulfate, which is one of a similar category of antibiotics. The polymyxins function in a way that is only lethal to gram-negative bacteria, yet this property allows them to kill bacteria very quickly.
The particular effectiveness of polymyxin B against infections associated with gram-negative organisms, particularly those due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, for which polymyxin B is the antibiotic of choice, enhances the broad-spectrum effectiveness of Terramycin against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. This is because polymyxin B is also effective against infections associated with gram-positive organisms. In addition to this, there is evidence to suggest that polymyxin B sulfate has some antifungal action. Citation needed]
The antibacterial effect of combining polymyxin with Terramycin is at the very least additive, and in many cases, a true synergistic activity is attained.
